What is a Treasury Bond?

A Treasury Bond is a type of Australian Government Bond. It is an investment where you lend money to the Australian Government in exchange for regular interest payments (known as coupon interest) and the return of your money when the investment matures. Treasury Bonds are backed by the Australian Government.

What are exchange-traded Treasury Bonds (eTBs)?

Exchange-traded Treasury Bonds (eTBs) are a way for individuals and organisations to invest in Australian Government Treasury Bonds through the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

When you purchase eTB units, you gain the economic benefits of owning an Australian Government Treasury Bond – such as earning interest and receiving the eTB’s face value when it matures.

Note: Each eTB unit has a face value of $100.

Key features of eTBs

  • Security – The Australian Government makes regular interest payments and pays the eTB’s face value amount when it matures.
  • Regular interest – Interest (known as Coupon Interest) is earned on the eTB’s face value at a fixed interest rate, with payments made semi-annually for the life of the investment. Refer to the Available eAGBs for interest rates and payment dates.
  • Variety of maturity dates – Refer to the Available eAGBs to see available eTBs and their maturity dates.
  • Tradeable investment – You can buy or sell eTBs on the ASX whenever the market is open.
  • Reliable information – ASX works with the Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM) to provide accurate information to eTB investors.

For a full list of benefits – and the potential risks – see the Investor Information Statement for eTBs.

How to invest in eTBs

Investing in eTBs is similar to buying shares on the ASX. You can purchase or sell eTBs through a licensed broker. If not speaking directly to a licensed broker or financial adviser, please make yourself familiar with the content of the Investor Information Statement.

You should always seek independent financial advice before making investment decisions.
